We are pleased to present the new work by Mark Williams in the exhibition PRIMARY MEANS.

Opening: Friday, 5.05.06, 7- 9 p.m.
Exhibition dates: 5.05. – 17.06.2006

The work of the American artist Mark Williams shown in the exhibition “PRIMARY MEANS” varies the theme of geometric abstraction from different perspectives. The dynamic in his charcoal drawings on hand made paper is created by altering contrasts of dark and light. The pieces of enamel on paper work in a similar way by the juxtaposition of different patches of colour. The blurred boarders of the rectangular and square shapes with their decent colouring emphasize the surface structure, a relief formed by the application of enamel on paper. Williams’ third complex of work shown in this exhibition consists of pieces composed of ink stamp marks on chequered notepaper and the relations between them. Form, colour and surface stay consistent in these pieces. Williams’ composition of the stamps marks is diverting the serial order that is produced by the reduced use of technique.

Williams keeps his works in his usual small format. In his work the formal range of geometrical shapes of rectangles and squares dominates. Here the distinctive relationships of different contrasts, shades of colour and materials enter into a dialogue with the minimal art of the 1960’s and 70’s way back to the understanding of artists such as Malewitsch or Mondrian.

Mark Williams, born in 1950 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, lives and works in New York City.
